The movie was written and directed by Master Mason Johnny Royal through TriCoast Worldwide, who was inspired to create the movie based on his own experiences going through the degrees of Master Mason, Knights Templar, and the Scottish Rite. Royal discovered Freemasonry when he was living in London and stumbled upon the United Grand Lodge of England. He was enamored by the building’s beauty and started to do research into the organization. Royal quickly became passionate about its teachings and felt like he had found what he had been searching for. Royal’s Masonic journey has led him to become a 32° Scottish Rite Mason and a public voice for Freemasonry.

The movie came out in 2017 during the 300th Anniversary of the United Grand Lodge of England, the place that first inspired Johnny Royal’s journey. In his own words “…I wanted to find a way to share the beauty and experiences that I have had within Freemasonry with the world without breaking my oath or obligations.” The film’s producer and active Freemason, Robert Doan, says that “…his goal in creating this movie was to ignite a spark of interest about Freemasonry and help shed light on an organization that promotes civility in a time when the world needs it the most.” 33 & Beyond: The Royal Art of Freemasonry was a result of this desire and Brothers from all corners of life are thankful for it.
