The common thread that binds all Freemasons together is the drive to become a better man. Upon joining this ancient fraternity, he embarks on a voyage of self-discovery that is defined by the pursuit of truth, a commitment to bringing relief to others and by an oath to care for his Brothers and their families. It’s a journey that begins when a man seeks to serve something greater than himself.
For many, becoming a Master Mason is only the beginning of their journey into Freemasonry. The 29 degrees of Scottish Rite Freemasonry provides the opportunity to delve deeper into the teachings of the blue lodge. It is also an opportunity to expand the camaraderie they have gained in their lodge and grow their network of Brothers by joining their local Scottish Rite Valley.
What is a Valley?
There are 15 states within the Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. Each state is comprised of chapters known as "Valleys" which are the heart and soul of Scottish Rite Freemasonry. Like a Masonic lodge, a Valley is not only the location but the community of Scottish Rite Masons which convene to confer the degrees, plan and host community events and welcome new Brothers.

A Master Mason interested in joining the Scottish Rite does so by submitting an application for membership. Acceptance is contingent on many factors, the foremost of which is being a Master Mason in good standing. Once the appropriate Valley receives the application, the Valley Secretary will determine the applicant’s eligibility to join.
If accepted, the Secretary will reach out with further information. To become a Scottish Rite Mason, the applicant will need to attend a 4° date or attend a Valley reunion. Reunions afford Brothers the opportunity to find greater depth in the teachings of Freemasonry while helping cultivate the fraternal relationships that are so important to Masonic life. They offer an invaluable opportunity to meet men with like-minded values in a local community setting.

Valley Reunions
Valley Reunions serve two primary purposes; one is to initiate new Brothers, and the second is for existing members to reconnect. Reunions are a chance for members to explore the teachings of the blue lodge in greater depths by witnessing the Scottish Rite degrees. These degrees are detailed plays put on by Valley members that include full props, costumes, and effects to help the overarching vision come together. Degrees convey a representation of Masonic philosophy intended to illustrate the purpose of life and help new brothers learn to better themselves and improve society.

More Than Degrees
Of course, reunions are not strictly about the degree ceremonies. They are also a chance for Brothers to experience fellowship with other Masons, some of whom may come from outside of their immediate community. It’s a time for socializing and refreshments, for learning from one another and building connections with Brothers old and new.
Being part of a Scottish Rite Valley is about much more than witnessing the degrees and socializing with fellow Masons. It requires a commitment to living the Scottish Rite core values: reverence for god, devotion to country, integrity, justice, tolerance and service. Together, we help realize these values by supporting our members in need, supporting our Scottish Rite charities, and organizing events in service to our communities. Putting these values into action – living them each day – is what makes a man grow as a Scottish Rite Mason and allow us to serve something bigger than ourselves.
Being active participants in our Scottish Rite Valleys allows us to come together and make strides in our Masonic journey. Our fraternal bonds, our unwavering dedication to serving those around us and our boundless exploration into Freemasonry’s ethical teachings and philosophy are what distinguish us as Brothers of the Scottish Rite, NMJ.
