For the past 24 years,The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Greater Boston participates in the Teddy Bear Classic Annual Golf Tournament in order to raise money for their center that helps children with dyslexia overcome daunting learning obstacles on a daily basis. In honor of National Dyslexia Awareness Month, we are taking a look back at this summer’s 2018 Tournament and sharing a few tidbits about the Dyslexia Center and their important mission.
On a cloudy summer day, spirits were high and Brothers were cheerful as the annual Teddy Bear Classic commenced on July 23. The event took place at the Sandy Burr Country Club in Wayland, Massachusetts where the tournament began with a shotgun start. There was a great turnout of Brothers and their family members, all eager to play for an important charity. The day started with a heartfelt speech by Brother Thomas McClintock, Golf Chairman, about the reason behind the event. Even a little rain didn’t impede the day’s fun with vendor booths set up around the green and tees sponsored by various lodges and Brothers.
Events like the Teddy Bear Classic help to bring the Children’s Dyslexia Center’s mission to life. The Scottish Rite Children’s Dyslexia Centers (CDC) have been helping enhance the lives of children with dyslexia for more than two decades. Today, there are more than 40 Dyslexia Centers in 13 states of our Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, aiming to tackle the challenge of dyslexia head-on by providing free tutoring for children, as well as training programs for highly skilled and dedicated tutors. The neurological disorder of dyslexia affects more people than we might think, yet it is difficult for children to receive the specialized attention they need in public schools and traditional academic settings. That is why the Children’s Dyslexia Centers are here to help. Dyslexia is a treatable condition and with early intervention and professional help, it can be overcome.
The CDC has a number of resources available, as well as a variety of volunteer opportunities. Fundraising walks, volunteer programs, and the chance to financially support individual children through the tutoring process. It costs more than $5,000 to put a child through the Dyslexia Center for one year, and a lot of that funding comes from individual donations, special events, and dedicated fundraisers like the Teddy Bear Classic Golf Tournament.
At the Scottish Rite, NMJ we are dedicated to helping children and their families end the frustration and disruption that can come with the discovery of dyslexia, as well as removing the stigma that individuals with dyslexia tend to face in the current academic landscape.
