Today, we’re sharing the story of Illustrious Brother Richard Schultz of the Valley of Northern New Jersey.
Brother Schultz’s 27-year career began in August 1986 on his first day at the police academy. “I was a young, wide-eyed 22-year old who was looking to make a difference,” he said.
As part of his training at the academy, he took a first aid class and, less than a year later, added EMT to his resume. With an EMT certification in hand, he began volunteering with his local ambulance squad where he met his wife.
During his tenure with the police force, Brother Schultz took on the role of public information officer. Additionally, Schultz gave his time teaching fifth grade students about the dangers of drugs as a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Officer.
Reflecting on his career, Schultz said “The satisfaction of helping another human in their hour of need has been most gratifying. There is indeed something to be said about serving others.”
After retiring from law enforcement in 2013, Brother Schultz has transitioned to a semi-retired lifestyle. He still retains his EMT certification and occasionally uses his skills at accident scenes.
He is also a middle school history teacher and an active member of his local lodge in the Valley of Northern New Jersey where he serves as an Officer.
The most rewarding part of his retirement is working summers at a YMCA camp infirmary, where he serves as a mentor to youth and enjoys “watching these incredible young people grow and mature.”
“I still carry the scars and memories of the more traumatic events but I can temper that with the knowledge that I helped others through my service,” said Brother Schultz.
