The Scottish Rite, NMJ Announces “The Path Forward: Empowering the Future of Freemasonry”

SR Hourglass Still005

The fraternity’s new book is a data-backed examination of how the Craft appeals to men today and why Freemasonry is well-positioned for long-term growth.

The core values of Freemasonry are timeless and resonate as much today with American men as they ever have. How do we know? The answer resides in our new book, The Path Forward: Empowering the Future of Freemasonry.

This tome is the result of comprehensive research conducted by the Scottish Rite, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction (NMJ) in 2023 that revealed a renewed interest in Freemasonry among the men of our country. The Path Forward builds on the data-driven analysis of the state of Freemasonry nearly a decade ago, Reclaiming the Soul of Freemasonry by past Sovereign Grand Commander John Wm. McNaughton, and reaffirms the notion that when positioned correctly, with messaging that reflects the authentic spiritual core of the Craft, Freemasonry is an attractive and viable fraternal membership option for men today.

The complete book is now available and can be purchased online via Amazon or the Masonic Marketplace.

The Path Forward provides fascinating and actionable insights into what men of today are looking for in social organizations, the struggles they are facing, and how Freemasonry can fit into today’s modern social landscape. The results demonstrate how global trends and cultural pressures align to support a sustained period of growth for the Craft. Some key findings include:

  • 91% of American men say the core elements of Freemasonry, such as moral character, service to charity, brotherhood, and pathways to self-improvement, are appealing.
  • 64% of men desire increased volunteerism, including easier ways to get involved with charitable acts in their community.
  • Millennials are the new target market with 77% of millennials surveyed saying they would consider joining once learning more about Freemasonry.

“The Scottish Rite, NMJ has long been committed to adapting the esteemed traditions of Freemasonry for the modern man,” said Walter F. Wheeler, 33°, Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite, NMJ. “The findings in this book provide a roadmap which every Masonic organization in the country can use to find new members and ensure Freemasonry thrives in our communities for generations to come.”

Following the release of Reclaiming the Soul of Freemasonry in 2016, the Scottish Rite, NMJ spearheaded the development of the Path Forward initiative and the subsequent “Not Just a Man. A Mason.” and Journey On campaigns, which have helped revitalize Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite, welcoming new members and increasing satisfaction.

Using our latest findings, we will continue evolving to meet the needs of modern men and revitalize our historic fraternity, helping it take its rightful place in society today. We hope you will join us as we continue along the path to the East.
