What is Masters of the Rite?

Masters of the Rite (MOTR) is an educational supplement to Thursday Night at the Rite (TNR).

Guided by Illustrious Brother Sandy Karstens III, MOTR occurs monthly during each TNR season and offers members the opportunity to further delve into each degree showcased at TNR and discuss its teachings.

Meet Your Host

Ill. Brother William “Sandy” Karstens IV, 33° is your host for each Masters of the Rite session. Hailing from the Valley of Burlington (VT), Brother Karstens boasts an impressive resume that makes him well-equipped to guide Brothers through the intricacies and lessons of Scottish Rite degrees.

He has spent the majority of his career as a physics professor at St. Michael’s College where he also served as chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physics, as well as president of the college’s Phi Beta Kappa chapter and of the Vermont Chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society.

In Freemasonry, Brother Karstens’s leadership is well known. He was raised in Washington Lodge #3 in Williston, VT in 2004 and received his 32° that same year at the Valley of Vermont. In 2010, he was coroneted with the 33° in Philadelphia.

Join the Rite Night

As a prequel to every Thursday Night at the Rite, we offer an online joining opportunity known as Join the Rite Night, which allows accepted Master Masons to jumpstart their journey to the 32° through an online initiation event.

Candidates witness the 4°: Builder (a requisite for becoming a Scottish Rite member), and meet and interact with fellow Brothers and NMJ leaders throughout the evening.
