Whether it’s your first or fiftieth Reunion, each gathering offers new lessons and connections. Brother Alex Hayes, 32°, reflects on the meaning, Brotherhood, and inspiration found in these experiences.

Every Scottish Rite journey begins at a Reunion. These meaningful gatherings are where Master Masons witness the 4°, officially join the Scottish Rite, and take their first steps into our Brotherhood.

Whether it’s your very first time or your fiftieth, each Reunion offers something new to discover. Brother Alex Hayes, 32°, reflects on his first Reunion and the lessons he continues to carry with him. His story is a reminder to every member—new and seasoned alike—of the legacy, fellowship, and inspiration found in these gatherings.

What was your first Reunion experience like?

My first Scottish Rite Reunion was awe-inspiring. The moment I stepped into the Cincinnati Masonic Center, I was taken aback by its grand architecture—the kind that leaves you instantly aware of the craftsmanship and devotion that went into creating it. Being in the heart of such a historic city gave me a tangible sense of Freemasonry’s lasting influence and legacy.

What is your favorite part of Reunions?

Without a doubt, it’s the Brotherhood and camaraderie. Brothers travel from near and far to experience each Valley’s unique degree work, and that creates a powerful atmosphere filled with new and familiar faces. Whether we end up grabbing lunch together or gathering for a friendly round of drinks afterward, Reunions always feel like a celebration of our shared values.

What would you tell a Brother attending his first Reunion?

I’d say, jump in wholeheartedly. Don’t be shy—introduce yourself to everyone you can, especially the 33° Masons. At first, I was nervous about approaching them, but I quickly learned that they’re approachable, supportive Brothers. They’re more than happy to welcome you and share their insights.

Over time, I’ve discovered that seeing the same degrees from different Valleys is a whole new experience each time. Every Valley has its own unique flavor when it comes to staging and presentation, which keeps me intrigued and often helps me notice new details or lessons.

Have you made new friends at Reunions?

Absolutely, and some of them have become my closest friends in Masonry. One of my favorite things is bringing Brothers from my Blue Lodge to their first Scottish Rite Reunion. Watching their reactions—the awe and excitement—always reminds me of my own first time, and it strengthens our bond.

For Brother Hayes, that first Reunion was more than an initiation; it was a doorway into a lifelong journey of meaning, Brotherhood, and light. Each gathering offers fresh lessons, friendships, and moments of inspiration that strengthen our ties as Scottish Rite Masons.
